The definition of NP/APN

A Nurse Practitioner/Advanced Practice Nurse is a registered nurse who has acquired the expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies for expanded practice, the characteristics of which are shaped by the context and/or country in which s/he is credentialed to practice. A master’s degree is recommended for entry level.

With the deployment of nurse practitioners, more and more tasks of doctors and specialists are transferred to nurse practitioners in the Netherlands. This leads to a better quality and organization of care that is cost-effective. In addition, it is attractive for health care professionals because it offers more prospects for growth and development. Not only hospitals use the nurse practitioner. Task transfer is also applied within GP care, home care, mental healthcare and nursing homes. The videos below address what task transfer entails, and discuss funding and responsibility.
